Uluru: Drone footage shows the landmark like youve never seen it before

MOST of us think we’re already well acquainted with Australia’s most iconic landmark — but new vision is offering a look at Uluru like we’ve never seen it before.

New drone footage, released today, has offered a new bird’s-eye perspective on the 600 million-year-old rock.

The drone was the first to be given permission to operate under permit inside Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park.

And the results are magnificent. The drone captured incredible close-ups of the 3.6km-long monolith — including cascading waterholes, boulders and other features not usually seen by tourists — as well as the breathtaking views of surrounding land.

Never before seen birds-eye view of Uluru

What we recognise as being Uluru is, in fact, just the tip of a huge rock that continues underground for up to 6km.

The feature is best known for its apparent ability to change colour, due to the result of filtering of the earth’s atmosphere on the sun’s rays.

Uluru is not only one of Australia’s top tourist destinations, it is a site of great significance to the local Anangu people.

The drone footage was released today by Voyages indigenous Tourism Australia.

“We are delighted to present this exclusive new perspective of one of the most astonishing landscapes on earth, and we thank the traditional owners for their support,” Voyages Chief Executive Officer Andrew Williams.

“We hope this video encourages travellers from both Australia and all over the globe to come and experience Uluru for themselves.

“While there is no replacement to enjoying first-hand the majestic beauty of Uluru, this footage gives a breathtaking insight into the majestic nature of the landscape.”

More than 300,000 people visit Uluru each year. Recently, a long-running debate reignited over whether tourists should be allowed to walk over the natural landmark.

The local Arangu people ask that tourists enjoy the view of the rock but refrain from climbing to respect its sacred significance.
