Biography of Tom Herman

He was born in Cincinnati on June 2, 1975, as Thomas Joseph Herman III but was eventually raised in Simi Valley, California by his mom Rita Thiet. According to Tom, his parents divorced when he was only one year old.

He put a BS bag in business administration from California Lutheran in 1997. He was a cum laude graduate and the recipient of a presidential scholarship. At California Lutheran, he was an All Southern California Athletic Conference wide receiver.

Career

Tom had always played American football as a high school student and during his time at California Lutheran University (1994-1997). In fact, it won’t be wrong to say that Herman ended his playing career after several injuries he suffered on the pitch as a player.

According to an ESPN.com story, Herman had as many as 13 knee surgeries that doctors had to at one point grow his cartilage in a lab in order to fully repair his joint. As a player, he also underwent four shoulder surgeries.

After retiring from the game, Tom Herman became a coach and his first job was with Texas Lutheran as a receivers coach. He worked as a graduate assistant under the supervision of Greg Davis.

After his time at Texas Lutheran as an assistant, he joined Sam Houston State, not as an assistant this time around but as a receivers coach. His time with Sam Houston State paid off as he led the Bearkats to two different competitions – the Southland Conference Championships and the NCAA Division I-AA Playoffs.

He also coached Jonathon Cooper, who emerged the NCAA Division I-AA Wide Receiver of the Year, he additionally produced all-conference receivers each season and a total of three Pan Am receivers.

After four seasons at Houston State, Hermana joined Texas State in 2005 as an offensive coordinator. He was with them for two seasons, leading them to Southland Conference. Under him, the team also made its first-ever Division I-AA appearance and ranked 8th nationally in scoring.

In 2007, he left Texas for Rice, where he served as offensive coordinator and quarterback coach. During his time with the team, they were ranked in the National Top 10 in passing offense.

Tom Herman also served at Iowa State as an offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach after leaving Rice. Like Rice, Herman brought the team to life, during his time in Iowa the team’s offense improved significantly, the team also broke many records.

He was also with Ohio State as an offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, Houston as a head coach, and Texas as a head coach as well. With him as coach, Texas recorded a 33-16 victory over Missouri in the Texas Bowl, marking their first victory since 2013 and their first bowl victory since 2012.

In 2015, Herman was named USA Co-Coach of the Year.

Net salary

Tom’s current base salary is $5 million a year since signing a five-year contract as head coach at Texas. With $28.75 million in base pay, with a minimum of $25 million guaranteed, the Longhorns coach earns a grand total of $5.25 million a year.

He will collect an additional $1 million if he remains coach of the Longhorns by December 2019. His other potential bonuses include $100,000 for winning a Big 12 championship and $250,000 for winning a national title.
