Charli XCX drags BBC Three for giving misogyny airtime
A couple of weeks on from airing an incredible documentary on the importance of feminism in the music industry, English pop star Charli XCX has called out BBC Three for giving a ‘men’s rights’ documentary more prominence.
On 14th December, the channel gave Reggie Yates’ ‘Extreme UK’ its usual primetime slot. This episode looked at groups of misogynistic men who believe their rights are being compromised when compared to women. The documentary featured an interview with Roosh V, who gives classes on ‘men’s rights’, and how “women are no longer trained to submit to a man.” Yes, there are literally people who live on this planet that, as a speaker at this class claims, believe that “women and gays are given anything they ask for.” And if you’re a British male, filled with hatred, bigotry and testosterone, you can take part as well!
In a series of tweets, Charli commented on a snippet of ‘Extreme UK’, saying: “this snippet is terrifying. and also, annoying. because i made a doc for the bbc that was shown on a tuesday at 10.30pm when a lot of my audience were unable to watch. this doc seems (from this snippet) to be discussing feminism in an entirely negative light and is shown prime time at 9pm.”
She added that people like Roosh V “don’t deserve airtime,” tweeting that: “positivity should be promoted. not negativity.”
Charli’s own ‘The F Word and Me’ documentary followed her world tour, where she also found time to interview fellow musicians – Ryn Weaver, Marina and the Diamonds, Liz – about their experiences in the music industry.
Charli, we applaud your efforts to expose this tragic and pathetic attempt at giving these mentally incompetent men a platform. Hatred and bigotry have no place on primetime television. Save that rhetoric for Donald Trump rallies. Thank you.
